Long-term commitment to Sweden

The Wallenberg family has actively worked on a long-term basis to support enterprise and research in Sweden, and internationally, ever since André Oscar Wallenberg founded Stockholms Enskilda Bank (today SEB) over 160 years ago. What is commonly referred to as the Wallenberg ecosystem includes 16 non-profit foundations, the public industrial holding company Investor AB and the private holding companies Wallenberg Investments AB and FAM AB, including Navigare Ventures AB and their respective holdings.

Wallenberg Foundations Grants 2023 – SEK 2.7 billion

Funding allocated to Swedish research totaled SEK 2.7 billion in 2023 - the largest total amount to date. Most of the funding by the foundations are in the form of grants awarded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, which focuses on basic research in the fields of medicine, natural sciences and technology. The foundations also award substantial grants in other fields, including social sciences and the humanities. Read more about the grants.

SEK 3 billion for research to create conditions for a sustainable society

The initiative creates a new research program – Wallenberg Initiative Material Science for Sustainability (WISE), to which the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation allocated SEK 2.7 billion during the period 2022 – 2033, along with a further SEK 380 million to Wallenberg Wood Science Center for research on renewable materials from forest products under the “New Materials from Trees for a Sustainable Future” program. Ecosystem

We are deeply involved in research and education through the Wallenberg Foundations and as an engaged and long-term owner of companies in which we, directly or indirectly, are lead owners. Dividends from these holdings fund basic science and education, contributing to the development of Sweden.

Marcus Wallenberg wrote this in a letter to his brother Jacob in 1946 in an attempt to convince him to leave the family’s interests in the railroad industry and focus instead on founding the airline SAS.
